Cher Lloyd - Want U Back (US Version)

2012
Album: Sticks and Stones
Directed by:
Record Label: SYCO, Sony

  • It starts off with of a close up of selena Gomez lip-synching, her face looks slightly solemn.
  • Then the shot changes to her smiling and posing which gives the hint that she is taking photographs.
  • Then it zooms out to a photography studio and we can tell this by the mise en scene and the male actor with a camera. She starts to take off her jewellery and shows which shows that she is fed up.
  • The lighting is very bright as it is trying to suggest the idea that she is at a photo-shoot, this idea is also shown through her glamorous make up, jewellery and dress.
  • What I noticed was the attention to detail regarding composition of shots and lighting which consolidates representation.

  • I like this shot because of the combination of close ups and how they were pieced together.
  • The medium shot starts off with Selena’s feet walking towards the camera to the pace of the song then it cuts to the shot of her looking back and fixing her hair.
  • this could suggest that she is looking back at her past and her walking could suggest that she is moving forwards. The close up shot then cuts to a close up of Selena holding a pair of expensive shoes, I like how the shoes are in focus.
  • The props in the shot Are well calculated to emphasise her femininity.

  • I like this split screen long shot of selena running towards the taxi. I like how we see the same shot but from 4 different shots. And I like how she walks out of ¼ to another ¼ of the screen and she looks bigger because a different shot was used on that ¼.
  • The lighting is bright because it is meant to symbolise the daytime.
  • This type of editing/SFX helps to create better viewing experience equally – it’s unique.

  • I like this medium shot of selena Gomez lip-synching to the mirror. I find this shot very powerful because it shows that she is communicating with herself and it also symbolises that she is talking to her inner self.
  • This shot matches the song as it is about loving who you are.
  • Mirrors are a common thing in music videos.
  • This shot is powerful offering a wider perspective of the character.

  • The low angle empowers her as an artist in this shot and the coloration of the shot stylise the video as well.

  • I like this shot because it matches audio with visuals, I like that the audience can spot the lyrics  and sing a long, a unique way of reinforcing the lyrics of the song.

  • The end suggest closer like a film – marking the end of the journey. The coloration matches the sand colour.

EDITING & TECHNIQUES

  • There is a range of shots that changes via fading to black and smooth cuts this is more subtle and suits the pace of the song.
  • A lot of split screens were used this is to possibly show her lip-synching and showing what she is passing or looking at as they are significant to the song as well as her lip-synching.
  • Tracking  was used frequently when she is walking which engages the audience as they are on a journey with her.

WHY I LIKED THE VIDEO AND HOW I'M GOING TO USE IT

  • I like this video because of the type of shots used and the smooth cuts. I the fact like that many close ups were used so the audience can familiarise themselves with selena Gomez.

REPRESENTATION & IDEOLOGIES

  • This song is mainly about self empowerment, embracing yourself and not letting negative comments get to yourself.
  • This goes against the ideology that women are emotional because in this music video selena Gomez is powerful because she is standing up for herself and other females.

USES AND GRATIFICATIONS

Personal Identity and Surveillance – Females can relate to this situation as it is something they may go through and it gives the encouragement and lets them know that they are not the only one that may feel like that.
