EVALUATION

QUESTION 4: HOW DID YOU USE NEW MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES IN THE CONSTRUCTION, RESEARCH, PLANNING AND EVALUATION STAGES?

For my A2 coursework I used Wix to display my portfolio as I found it very useful and it allowed me to be creative during my foundation portfolio.

Also after the website being revamped I found it much more user-friendly while equally providing more outcomes to make my e-portfolio look sleek and professional. Even if a lot of the software used and techniques were similar in A2, I felt more confident using them- in fact this made me venture out more on my creativity.

WEB 2.0

Web 2.0 has been the platform for all of my research, it has allowed me to find out information that were quickly and accessible at times some of the information found were inaccessible in books. The web offers so much nowadays that DIY productions like mine can be realised to a standard that are comparable to real texts. Without the use of the internet, I would not have managed to complete my production to that level.

From the moment I was introduced to the brief for my coursework, the internet became my immediate port of call. I started researching for information on Google which led me other sites where I could conduct case studies of various artists whose videos were easily accessible on sites like YouTube. I could cut, import, and add captions to different shots I analysed. Before the recent proliferation of software, this would have been a time consuming task.

I used the internet for research but also for a variety of different things. I used YouTube and other videos sharing sites to search for tutorials for special effects and editing which I found really useful. Equally creating an animatic proved too much easier to make production decisions when I could match in action to lyrics. The old traditional paper method is now obsolete. It is precisely those improvements in technology that allows us to realise projects of this calibre.

GOOGLE

I used the search engine Google as a base for my research and planning. Google allowed me to find the specific web pages I wanted without having to go through unnecessary websites. Google also allowed me to go onto Google Images which was a big help when looking for digipaks, costumes, posters and many other images used on my coursework.

UNSIGNED.COM

Unsigned.com is a website where people who are not signed to a record label put their songs up in search of getting signed, getting feedback and gaining some fans. I found my music video song on this website. The filter option was very useful as it allowed to filter out genres I did not want to do. I also allowed me to preview the songs and get extra information such as their name, location and what they look like. Having a database like this has enabled me to select the artist for my video.

WIKIPEDIA

I used this website the most throughout my research. I used Wikipedia to find out about artists and their music videos. Wikipedia also helped me with finding out definitions to different genres and finding the history of companies and channels. There are also other sites that I have visited that have exposed me to useful information for production.

SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES

Social networking has greatly changed the way communication exchanges take place. I made use of Skype, Twitter and Facebook for numerous reasons. I firstly contacted my actor and artist using Facebook and collected audience feedback via social networks as well.

EMAIL

Aol email was also the other medium I used to contact the artist but unfortunately I did not get a reply. However, to technologies I was able to contact her making communication between client and manager even faster. Things Like this were hardly possible a decade ago.

WIX

Wix is a website that allows users to create their own website. I used this platform so that I could create my e-portfolio for my promotional campaign. As the internet offers so many opportunities nowadays, the fact that Wix is free to use in an invitation to people to step towards multi-media facilities. The site offers one the opportunity to design your site, upload pictures, text and videos, presentations and a range of graphics.

The good thing about Wix through web 2.0- it has turned many industries paperless. I could uploaded, edit my diary and site wherever I was as long as I had access to the internet.

Wix definitely kept me really organised and ideas were easily shared with others and revision of ideas were smooth. Without sites like Wix, I doubt I could have presented my work in an organised way.

DA FONT

I also made use of the website Da Font which is a database for different types of fonts. There I could choose a whole range of fonts, check which one worked and suited my genre. Having such a choice can only be possible through the opportunities created by the internet. I downloaded font ‘Bebas Neue’ as it looks modern and stylish, it also stands out because it is bold and easy to read.

TUMBLR

In my whole experience of promoting my unsigned artist, I was able to seek information and improve my skills at editing or simply to be more creative in my campaign by using sites like Tumblr and YouTube for tutorials.

COMPUTER SOFTWARE

Computer software is becoming more advanced and accessible for everybody to use, this is why there is an increase of D.I.Y music videos in the last few years. Many different types of software have been created to cater to everybody's needs but still have a professional outcome. Having all these software on my laptop has been very helpful. The ones I used are below.

MICROSOFT WORD

Microsoft Word was essential during the whole process. From lyrics deconstruction to drafting contracts and creating shot lists amongst others, I used Microsoft Word. Once more without technologies and software like these, I would not be able to realise this project in a professional way.

MICROSOFT POWERPOINT

PowerPoint was very important in the way I documented my progress. I was able to successfully upload my presentations on Wix.

ADOBE PHOTOSHOP

Photoshop is a very professional software used by many people when creating real media products. I used Photoshop for my digipak and poster. Photoshop allowed me to change the vibrancy of my photograph and add text boxes and various designs to my digipak and poster. PANASONIC CAMERAS AND CAMERA EQUIPMENT

The HD Panasonic camera that we were given along with a tripod and dolly were really useful. The quality of footage on HD is what the audience expects today with advancement in technologies. The tripod helped me to keep the shots steady in places and dolly helped in tracking shots.

Conclusion

With the easy access to technologies nowadays, not only that it gives more people to try more people to try film making and photography but it has simply enhanced the quality of products that one can make at a lower cost of technologies like these have allowed students like me to put together a promotion campaign for an  unsigned artist with a lot of confidence.
