Star Image and Development

RICHARD DYER

  • According to Dyer a star is just an image, not a real person.
  • They are  created out of a range of materials (e.g. advertising, magazines, music videos)
  • “Star images are always extensive, multimedia, intertexual” Richard Dyer
  • He says that stars are artificial images made by the management to represent real people. They also create them with a USP so they can be copied and seen as influential. An example would be Rihanna dying her red and wearing creepers and Wiz Khalifa having a blonde streak in his hair.
  • He also said that stars are manufactured by the music industries for one reason which is to make money out of the fans. Stars are made to in accordance to what the audience want and like, this is why so many artist are similar.  Some institutions purposely do this because they know it’s the safe option and they will get profit from it.
  • “Stars are commodities produced and consumed on the strength of their meanings.” Richard Dyer. Which means being a star is just a business.
  • He also says that stars provide audiences with ideas on what people should look like and how they should act.
